A streamlined version of the radar animator is used to view images.
The most useful scan is likely to be the 24 hour total precipitation product. Storm total precipitation can be estimated to fill in the gaps between weather stations. It can also show the total precipitation produced by an approaching line of showers which can be useful for a short term forecast.
The radar animations in the Standard view on this site use the Environment Canada 'national radar layer or composite' which is based on the DPQPE scan. The word "composite" means to combine radar data from overlapping radar coverages to produce a better estimate of precipitation. Occasionally you'll see bogus radar echoes on the composite images and referring back to the single radar DPQPE images can help to decipher the issue, generally one misbehaving radar.
There is plenty of information on the Environment Canada About Canadian weather radar page.
