The website presents observations from Canadian federal, provincial and regional government and Nav Canada weather stations. The addition of Meteorological Service of Canada radar, public forecasts and weather model forecasts (presented by spotwx.com) and US weather satellite make it more useful as a source of day-to-day weather information.
The goal is to provide "clear" weather data, where you are clear as to what you are looking at and what it means about the world. Wind, temperature and precipitation are highly variable in time and space so station siting, instrument accuracy and reliability, frequent reporting, nearby station reports and weather radar are all important. Finally, fast access to easily read data is crucial for putting it all together.
Work on this website began in early 2021 as a stay at home project during the first covid-19 winter and after 25 years as a weather forecaster on the west coast forecasting for BC, coastal and offshore waters and the Yukon. I was particularly motivated by the lack of easy free access to the weather station data, precipitation data in particular, that the federal government collects. It spends millions annually*** on these observations and provides them free of charge on its data servers in formats that are great for IT professionals and lousy for anyone using the data to understand the weather.
There are no Environment Canada weather warnings on this site. Humidex, wind chill and UV index are trimmed from the EC forecasts to save space and because they aren't "clear"!
The site is available and free to all. Frequent automated high volume use is discouraged as computer and connection resources are limited. See the 'Data sources' link for alternatives.
